Design Ideas – Living Room

Tuesday, June 10th, 2014

Here are some ideas and things to consider when decorating your living room. Color scheme, focal points and accessories will make the difference. Take a look!

Focal Point – Fireplace
fireplace
In this living room the fireplace takes center stage. Accentuated with a mirror above and a set of candles that can again be found throughout the room everything is set to promote the center piece, the fireplace. The candles and warm colors create warmth and make it an inviting space.

Focal Point – Window Shades
woven-wood-shades
In this room the windows are the point of interest. The woven wood shades made of natural bamboos pop and stand out while creating relaxed comfort. The rest of the room complements the natural shades by utilizing earthy tones and naturals. A splash of color is added with a few throw pillows to complete the look.

Focal Point – Color
yellow
Here the color talks the talk. Using bright strong yellow in several areas like furniture and accent pieces in contrast to the white walls and flooring, an energized, young atmosphere is created. This room comes to live with its vibrancy and is complemented by a soft plush carpet to soften the look. The yellow parts are in balance and frame the room nicely.

Focal Point – Lighting
lighting
The detail is in the lighting. While the color scheme is kept neutral and with two tones only, the room comes to live through lighting. Using lot’s of overhead lights and an interesting oversized glowing light stand, the room gets its soft and inviting character. It transforms the walls and sitting area into an piece of art.

The main point of all these living rooms is that somebody took one idea and then worked the rest of the room around that thought. So… what’s your idea?

Design Considerations For Window Coverings

Thursday, May 8th, 2014

In the world of window coverings a variety of designs and benefits are offered to enhance interior living space. Most people are attracted to a certain look and choose based on looks. However finding the right blind or shade begins with the basic understanding of window covering characteristics and their benefits. Here are some things to consider:

Living Space
Each area or room in a home has a primary activity. While a bedroom is an area for rest where darkening and privacy is a concern a living room area might have more of a focus on daily activity where lots of light and preserving a gorgeous view is desired. A home office would require soft light to work on your PC while a home theater room requires complete light control. In certain climates windows facing north might require additional insulation while in other parts of the country UV protection could be an issue to protect from too much damaging sun exposure.

Light Control & Privacy
Again you want to look at what degree of privacy or light control is required in an area to fulfill your needs. Bedrooms might need a lot more darkening for a person that needs a room to be completely dark in order to sleep, while another prefers to rise at the crack of dawn and welcomes the first rays of sunlight to filter into the room. Privacy will clearly always be required in a bedroom, which eliminates sheer products all together. When purchasing for a family room, some people might welcome a sheer window treatment to offer a beautiful view into a backyard, while others will have to maintain privacy and compromise with a treatment that allows a view. You want to be very clear what you need out of your window covering in these regards.

Child & Pet Safety
When considering beautiful new treatments this is often overlooked, but should be your first priority. Considering shades for a home with young children and pets should always have products with cordless features. Many products are available with hidden cords or cordless lifting systems and should be at least installed in children’s bedrooms, play areas or possibly all around the house.

Energy Efficiency
Today, homes are built with better insulation, and all the home trends are going towards energy efficient products. This is no different in the window covering industry. In homes where extreme heat or cold is an issue, window shades with additional insulating properties should be considered. While a single layered roller shade might be pretty to look at, a double honeycomb shade or wood blind would be a much better choice to keep the interior insulated.

Operating Systems
While a cordless shade will be nice to eliminate dangling cords, it might not be practical in a window that is hard to reach. Here a motorized shade could be the way to go. Or when considering a window treatment for a huge wall of windows, a stronger clutch operated shade would be recommended versus a standard lifting system that will wear out cords soon. Also, do you want flexibility to open and close slats or will you be happy to have a shade that is either lowered or raised? All these practical and functional issues should be thought about before making a decision on the right window covering.

We always welcome you to call us, we are more than happy to walk you through the different product that will work for your needs.

Add Color to Your Life

Friday, April 4th, 2014

While neutral whites and off whites are classy and calming, they can also get a bit boring. When everything is tone in tone we can easily feel we need something to energize a room. So why not add a splash of color?

A splash of color can come from several sources. Add throw pillows to accent your cream couch. Windows are always a go to. Many color choices are available in the cellular shades product line, but also roller shades or sheer horizontal shades come in colors to energize your surroundings. Sometimes it’s enough to have a huge painting along with a couple of decors to bring out color. Or is it an access wall that will kick it up a notch?

Whichever route you want to go, it is important not to overdo it here. A little color can bring a room to life, but painting the entire room in a strong vibrant color could change the effect from energizing to too busy and aggressive. Working with color is a lot of fun, and can change the appearance of an entire room.

Great colors for spring are greens and yellows. Also very energizing can be peppy blues, as long as they are not too dark. Red is often considered a happy color, again, just a splash or else it will turn to aggressive. Reds can very well be paired with orange in combination. Let the imagination and your taste be your guide!

Here are a few examples displaying window coverings and color:

Blue and green together screams “happy”. Be sure to always tie things together by having a second item in the same color, like a vase or some other deco piece.

Here a soft cellular shade in teal. Not too preppy, but certainly enhances the kitchen. Calming and enticing it simply works.

cellular-brown1
Here a warm brown brings the room to life. Again, the second item where the color is duplicated is in the comforter. It brings it all together.

This might be a bit much for most of us, but you never know ;-)

Add Style And Save Money!

Tuesday, March 25th, 2014

Are you tired of sitting in a fishbowl? Have you been looking at those bare windows but the budget is tight after getting into your new home? There are solutions for you that add style without draining your pocketbook.

We aren’t talking ready-made blinds. Even though you can save money with standard sized off the shelf products, the ill-fitted look is something you might regret later. Why not go with the popular wood blind look for a little less money? Faux wood blinds might be the perfect solution! Made of durable PVC or composite materials, faux wood blinds look almost identical to popular wood blinds. Light control and privacy are excellent. Just rotate the slats into an open or close position or lower and raise the blind altogether for an unobstructed view outside. Versatility and practicality is what’s important. Faux wood blinds work well with almost any decor. The sleek lines are great in a contemporary setting but also work very well in a traditionally designed home. Choose from the cooler white and off-whites or warmer tans, to inspiring stains like golden oak, walnut or warm cherry. These sturdy blinds have a steel headrail that can accommodate heavy products for very large applications. This headrail is finished off with the decorative valance.

This cost-effective product also offers great upgrades. The traditional route holes can be completely eliminated. The no-route option allows for a sleek look and no sun leaking through those latter holes. Decorative cotton tapes can set that special accent and either contrast the slat or blend with it. Faux woods can give you that seamless polished and refined luck no matter what color you choose.
