Solar window shades or screen shades are in construction very similar to the roller shades (or Hunter Douglas also offers them in a Designer Screen "Roman Shade"). What is unique to the solar screen shades is their sheer to semi-sheer materials which are generally made of fiberglass / polyester blends, a perfect material to protect furnishings of harmful UV rays while giving keeping a screened view out. The different subcategories in this product line are divided into openness factors, which describes "how sheer" the solar shade is. The higher the openness factor, the clearer the view out. Solar shades are operated with a standard cord that allows lowering and rising with precision. A motorized version is available through Hunter Douglas. Typical Use: Any room where a view to outside is desired.

Solar Shades - 5% (and less) Openness Factor

A lower openness factor increases UV blockage, but the outside view will not be as clear. The higher openness factor creates a better view, but decreases UV blockage.
